SUMMARY: To provide effective leadership in developing and maintaining an elementary school educational program of highest quality.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Staff Management:

  1. Interviews, screens, and recommends the teaching, clerical, nursing, paraprofessional, and custodial staff members from the referred list of candidates from the Personnel Department, and recommends staff members based upon qualifications and District policies.
  2. Assigns selected staff members to positions best suited for potential success.
  3. Visits the classrooms or other work places frequently, and systematically records areas of strength and weakness of employees.
  4. Objectively evaluates staff members according to the District schedule, or as needed, and sends written evaluation reports to the personnel department.
  5. Provides written progress reports on detected areas of concern with each staff member on an ongoing basis.
  6. Assigns work to staff members according to the developed job descriptions.
  7. Alerts staff members to District newsletters, policies, and procedures through written staff bulletins and staff meetings, as needed.
  8. Assigns staff members to adequate supervision of pupils and facilities.
  9. Confers with staff members and solves staff differences at the earliest possible time.
  10. Supervises and assumes responsibility for all school personnel in carrying out their responsibilities.
  11. Provides in-service training to staff members on job requirements and procedures on an ongoing basis and requests assistance from District staff members in areas in which specific expertise is needed.
  12. Inspects and reviews questionable and frequent illnesses and industrial injuries and alters the staff when abuse is evident.

Plant Management:

  1. Assigns work responsibilities and inspects and supervises the cleanliness and care of the school facility.
  2. Makes thorough inspections of school facilities for compliance with fire, insurance, and health requirements.
  3. Assumes the responsibility for the school facility assigned, is available after hours in case of fire or severe vandalism, and provides security for facilities and equipment to protect the interest of the District.
  4. Submits loss reports, self-inspection reports, etc. as scheduled.
  5. Assigns staff members to correct deficiencies detected on self-inspection and health department reports.
  6. Requisitions building maintenance for items not covered by school custodians.

Records and Reports:

  1. Provides for storage, maintenance, and updating of policy handbooks, state statutes, departmental procedures, and curriculum guides, and annually reviews with the staff pertinent information contained in these documents.
  2. Provides for a school handbook, staff bulletins, and parent, staff, and pupil newsletters.
  3. Outlines procedures for staff in-service training and school personnel; inspects and assumes full responsibility for accuracy in the registration of pupils, registers, attendance records, permanent record cards, confidential folders, inventory book, etc.
  4. Provides for the safe storage and management of all records, and keeps confidential all personnel and pupil records.
  5. Provides for the timely submission of reports, as scheduled.

Program Implementation:

  1. Enforces the prescribed goals, scope and sequence, objectives, and subject-area time allotments.
  2. Schedules students to regular and special classes.
  3. Provides for regular pupil assemblies to enrich the needs of the school and the community.
  4. Requires and reviews lesson plans of all instructional staff members to determine coverage of objectives and scope and sequence.
  5. Encourages and enforces homework policy.
  6. Encourages library book usage to enrich classroom activities, and reviews book usage.
  7. Reviews teachers' record books for objective recording of pupil progress.
  8. Requisitions supplies, materials, and textbooks to support the program and effectively manage the school allocations provided.

Pupil Achievement:

  1. Reviews the individual achievement of pupils to determine if work is up to potential.
  2. Reviews pupil and class achievement with each instructional staff member and alerts staff members to deficiencies and successes.
  3. Establishes a high achievement expectancy level for all instructional programs and activities.
  4. Makes recommendations for supplemental services to pupils and staff members to increase all areas of achievement.
  5. Objectively assesses overall pupil achievement and makes recommendations to staff members who do not meet expectancy levels.
  6. Assumes full responsibility for school achievement.
  7. Enforces District policies on pupil promotion, retention, and state graduation requirements.

Pupil Management:

  1. Communicates the high expectancy level of discipline to staff members and pupils.
  2. Establishes written rules to guide consistent procedures for pupil discipline.
  3. Assigns school staff members to ensure adequate supervision during passing and recess time.
  4. Investigates reported misbehavior and provide due process for each individual pupil.
  5. Enforces the discipline procedure outlined by the District.
  6. Oversees discipline procedures to ensure fair and equitable punishment.
  7. Reviews and makes final recommendations for suspension, according to District procedures.
  8. Assumes full responsibility to ensure that all children have a free and safe place to attend school and are protected from undue abuse by other children.
  9. Works to establish a low percentage of absence of pupils and contacts parents and takes court action for excessive absences.

Parent/Community Involvement:

  1. Establishes and maintains an active parent/teacher organization with regularly scheduled meetings (parent advisory committees are not considered parent/teacher organizations).
  2. Requires teachers to participate in parent/teacher organization as per agreement.
  3. Makes contact with churches and civic organizations in the school attendance area to interpret programs of the school.
  4. Provides the use of school facilities to community groups as per the District's policy and procedures.
  5. Is available to, and returns parent calls to, solve children/school problems.
  6. Explains the education program and District direction to other parents and community.
  7. Works with community groups to provide service to pupils needing assistance.

General Activities:

  1. Attends and participates in scheduled administrative meetings.
  2. Recognizes and respects the feelings of colleagues.
  3. Sets the tone for dress appropriate for the school environment.
  4. Frequently reviews District policies and procedures to enable appropriate enforcement.
  5. Attends Governing Board meetings and is prepared to present innovation programs to the Board and the public as appropriate.
  6. Establish and maintain good rapport with students, employees, community members and vendors.
  7. Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  8. Other job related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Education/Certification:

  • Valid Arizona Administrative Certificate
  • Obtain and maintain a valid Arizona Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card (AZ IVP FPCC)
  • Master's degree or higher

Experience:

  • Three (3) years of successful teaching and/or administrative experience

Computer Skills:

  • Demonstrated competency in computer applications such as Word, Excel, e-mail and typing.

Communication Skills:

  • Ability to read and interpret general documents such as employee handbooks and safety/training manuals.
  • Ability to write general correspondence and speak effectively with others.
  • Good communication skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively with staff and community.
  • Possesses a high degree of the conceptual, technical and human skills essential for performing the responsibilities.

Math Ability:

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to interpret assortment of instructions furnished in variable forms.
  • Ability to apply reason to research and solve moderately complex issues with little or no assistance.
